Gutters · Drainage

How often should you clean your gutters in the Raleigh area?

By Pine State Exteriors ·

Gutters only have one job—carry roof water away from your house—but a clogged gutter quietly turns into stained siding, soaked beds, rotting fascia, and water at the foundation. In a region with this many trees, cleaning is a regular chore, not a once-in-a-while one.

A good starting schedule

For most Raleigh-area homes, twice a year is the right baseline:

  • Late spring, after pine pollen, seed pods, and spring blossoms have dropped.
  • Late fall, once most leaves are down—often late November into December.

Adjust from there:

  • Heavily wooded lots (especially pines directly over the roof) may need a third cleaning.
  • Homes with few trees can sometimes stretch to once a year.
  • Gutter guards help but don’t end maintenance. Fine debris and pollen still build up on screens and mesh, and they need periodic cleaning too.

Signs your gutters are overdue

  • Water spilling over the edge during a normal rain.
  • Plants or seedlings growing in the gutter.
  • Sagging runs or gutters pulling away from the fascia.
  • Stripes or stains on siding below the gutter line.
  • Washed-out mulch or a trench in the bed under a corner.
  • Downspouts that barely trickle while the gutter overflows.

Don’t forget the downspouts

A clean gutter doesn’t help if the downspout is clogged—or if it empties right against the foundation. Make sure each downspout:

  • Flows freely (a quick flush with a hose is a good test).
  • Discharges several feet away from the house, onto ground that slopes away.

If water still collects near the foundation after a storm, that’s a drainage question worth looking at.

Doing it safely

Gutter cleaning means ladder work, often on uneven ground and near power lines. If your home is two stories, the roof is steep, or you’re not comfortable on a ladder, it’s worth having someone do it.

We clean gutters by hand, flush downspouts, and photograph anything that needs repair. Many cleanings on one- and two-story homes can get an instant estimate—you’ll just need the approximate length and a couple of photos. More on our gutter services.
