Planning an exterior paint job in the Raleigh area
A good exterior paint job lasts years and makes the whole house feel new. A rushed one starts peeling in a season or two. The difference is almost always timing and preparation, not the paint brand.
When to paint
Paint needs the right conditions to cure:
- Temperatures within the paint’s label range, including overnight—some products allow cooler temperatures than others.
- Dry surfaces and no rain expected while the paint cures.
- Moderate humidity. Muggy evenings and heavy dew can affect the finish.
Around Raleigh, spring and fall usually offer the most reliable stretches. Summer works with early starts and attention to sun and humidity; winter limits the window.
What good prep looks like
Most of a quality paint job happens before the first coat:
- Washing to remove mildew, pollen, and grime so paint can bond.
- Scraping and sanding loose and peeling paint.
- Repairing small areas of soft or rotted wood (larger repairs are quoted separately).
- Caulking gaps at trim, corners, and windows.
- Spot-priming bare wood and repairs.
- Protecting plants, walks, windows, and fixtures.
Ask any painter how they’ll handle each of these. Vague answers are a warning sign.
Measure the outside, not the inside
Your home’s interior square footage doesn’t tell anyone how much wall there is outside. A two-story home and a ranch with the same floor area have very different exteriors. Good estimates use wall measurements and photos—like the distance around the house and the number of stories.
Older homes and lead paint
If your home was built before 1978, it may have lead-based paint under newer coats. Federal rules require renovation and painting contractors who disturb that paint to follow lead-safe work practices. That affects how scraping, sanding, and cleanup are done—and it’s a reason to mention the age of your home up front.
Choosing colors
- HOA or historic district? Check requirements before you fall in love with a color.
- Test samples on several sides of the house; light changes everything.
- Big changes (dark to light, or the reverse) may need extra coats.
Painting projects are reviewed by a person before pricing, because prep and condition vary so much. Start a painting estimate with a few photos, or read more about our exterior painting.
